Happy (hot and soupy) Friday!
This week //
I’m back in DC! I’m petsitting for a friend and enjoying having their riverside house as a base for the area over the next couple weeks. I arrived yesterday in time to see Trampled by Turtles and Shakey Graves perform at the Anthem — one of my friends is a huge Shakey fan so we arrived early and had a great view.
Enjoying + link love //
The piece I’ve been thinking about the most this week is Plough’s “In Defense of Chastity.” So many good thoughts about what liberation really is and freedom from vs freedom unto.
Matthew Loftis in Plough: “Fundamentally, the basic problem we often face is that people want to feel like they have done something good without taking the time to ask whether that good thing is as blessed to receive as it is to give. And it is easiest to give away the stuff you weren’t going to use anyway.”
Alasdair MacIntyre pops up in many online philosophy circles, and I enjoyed learning more about him through a LRB review of his biography.
Really informative look into the process of writing and revising an essay from Celine Nguyen.

Looking ahead //
Spending these weeks in DC catching up with friends, visiting my favorite farmers markets, and hiking (heat permitting).
I wanna read that whole Erik Varden book on Chastity. A term I didn't hear until recent years, when I started reading and learning from Catholics. There's so many concepts and regular reference to the virtues - which were kinda cast to the wayside elsewhere in Christianity. :)
